Tour of the Orlando Union Rescue Mission
Homelessness can be a difficult time for adults. But the situation becomes even more heartbreaking when children are involved. The Orlando Union Rescue Mission Home is a 158-bed transitional housing facility accommodating single women, single mothers with children and married couples with children. It is one of the only places in Central Florida that keeps the family together during this time of great stress.
The facility’s clean, home-like atmosphere provides residents private and semi-private rooms and bathrooms at no charge. Homeless women, children and families live in the Home until they are able to regain their footing and live a self-sufficient lifestyle once again.
The Volunteer Vixens took a tour of the O.U.R. Mision Home to educate ourselves on the facility along with understanding how our group may better support the residents. While the Mission provides basic living services including meals, laundry facilities and daycare, the heart of our program is Christian mentoring. Each guest at O.U.R. Mission Home is assigned a case manager who helps map out a customized program for permanent recovery and walks with the family until they can stand on their own. It really is an amazing place of healing all around.
I'm proud that our ladies have selected the O.U.R. Mission Home to be a project that we will focus on in May 2011 for our Family Fun Night event. Stay tuned for more information on that! In the meantime, check out www.ourm.org for more information.
