Camp Helen State Park (Panama City Beach)
Just gorgeous... this is a view of the lake
Camp Helen is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on three sides, and Lake Powell – one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida. Prehistoric middens and mounds indicate that humans inhabited the area more than 4,000 years ago (though I’m still not sure what a midden is). From 1945 until 1987 Camp Helen was a company resort for the employees of an Alabama textile mill. Some of those buildings have now been restored and are littered all over the campground. The 180-acre park is for day use only and there is a $4.00 entrance fee paid on the honor system (though its monitored closely and I advise you to not ignore this – you will be called out on it). Activities include swimming, beachcombing, nature trails, hiking and both freshwater and saltwater fishing. There’s a sign warning of alligator presence but I didn’t see any. The beach is gorgeous but it was a very windy day (ouch that sands stings when its whipped at your legs that intensely).
The Gulf... gorgeous white sand
Super windy day!
Fair enough warning...
