John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge

By 6:58 PM

From The Jacksonville Landing, you can jump into the Main Street Bridge, formally known as the John T. Alsop, Jr. Bridge (signs still call it this). The 1,900-foot-long, steel-center lift span bridge opened in July of 1941. It's named for one of the city's most popular leaders who rode into town as one of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders and served as mayor from 1923-1937, then again from 1941-1945.The bridge is massive in size and humbling as you take an adventure crossing it.  Along the way we even stopped to chat with some of the workers of the bridge, asking them questions and sweet talking them into allowing us to go up to the control booth/cabin.  No such luck.  Oh well.. it was a fun adventure regardless.
