Black Bears in the Smokey Mountains (Finally!!)

By 6:35 AM

I have been traveling to the Smokey Mountains (Gatlinburg, TN area) for three years and in frustrating fashion, have never seen a black bear (in person).  I've done Cades Cove, many of the waterfall or just regular hikes, stayed in various (wooded cabins)... and despite the reassuring comments from coworkers about patience... nothing.  Well.. the past two weeks have found me living in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN.  During this time I was blessed to play host to some special people that came to visit and stay with me for several days over the Memorial Day weekend.  We did many of the same treks I've done before... Laurell Falls, Cades Cove, etc. But alas!  Something WAS new... something was different.  In a very blessed way, we saw black bears up close and personal not once, but twice!  Such a small blessing but one none-the-less that made my entire week that much brighter.  It was simply stunning to watch such an amazing creature in their natural habitat like we did.  Below are a few photos we were able to capture.
Laurel Falls - saw this bear enjoying lunch near the beginning of the trail
Cades Cove - There were two small brother bears just playing around
