Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp
For those of you who have followed this blog, you know most of the “new experiences” take place by random chance and aren’t preconceived or planned. Visiting Cassadaga was actually on a list I created of “potential new experiences” for the year. I’ve heard many stories about the camp, including the typical ghost tours where orbs and fairies are spotted (and often ‘photographed’) along with the various healing services offered and of course the many mediums available for readings. I’m a Christian and stand strong in what I believe in, but I also remain open minded to those who believe differently than I do and I enjoy learning about various ways of life and the beliefs that fuel those life style choices.
With my various travels through Central Florida right now, I took advantage of a few unaccounted for hours yesterday to make a stop at the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp. I’m so glad I did… what a fantastic experience. Hope you enjoy some of the random photos snapped while there. I stole a good friend to step off the beaten path with me for this adventure and we both walked away claiming it was “a good day”.
Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp is a 115 year old community (established in 1894) of spiritually-minded people located in Central Florida. The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association™ consists of approximately 57 acres with 55 residences. Those who reside here have chosen to share in a community of like-minded people where they can live, worship and work in harmony with their beliefs. About 25 of the Camp’s residents are mediums who offer counseling from their homes. Although residents may own their homes within the Camp grounds, the church retains ownership of the land. And, though the word "Camp" appears in it's name, there are actually no camping facilities available. "Camp meeting" is an antiquated term for annual gatherings of religious groups.
Designated a Historic District on the National Register Of Historic Places in 1991, the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association is the oldest active religious community in the Southeastern United States. In recent years, Spiritualism has seen a resurgence of interest. The "New Age Movement" has attracted many who are searching for a better way of life, those who wish to empower themselves and take responsibility for their lives. Spiritualism holds something for everyone, no matter what their religion or where they are on their spiritual path. The Camp welcomes not only believers, but the curious and skeptical, as well.
If you get a chance to go there for a day trip, check them out. There website provides a lot of helpful information. www.cassadaga.org. Enjoy some of the photos we snapped... we had such a great time taking them! Disclaimer for all my family reading this: I did NOT go see a medium of get a reading done. I just explored the camp and kept an open mind as I learned about the history of the place.
This dog looks like he just saw a ghost... maybe it was a fairy..
These parking signs were soooo strange!
The Psychic Therapy Center
The Spiritualist Camp Welcome Center and Gift Shop - got some fun things here and met some interesting characters - this acts like the "hub" of the camp for visitors
I swear it looked like witch capes that were drying on the clothes line... hmmmm
Being a medium doesn't bring in a lot of money apparently... the houses were so unique and cluttered!
The Cassadaga Hotel - not sure I'd want to spend the night at this place
The Spirit Zone - they hold seances here. The room looked like a storage room with a circular table and a few chairs in the middle of it
Practicing my meditation... though I couldn't stop laughing
Heed the sign people... I'm meditating!
In the lobby of the Cassadaga Hotel
Harmony Hall - basically the apartment building for the town folk
NO IDEA what this is... randomness at its best
One of the medium's homes - just lots of neat buildings. Very old most of them.
The temple
So... was this woman a smoker or something!? THIS IS HER MEMORIAL?!
This sucker was creepy... just sat smiling at us... with this huge cheesey grin. He was HUGE!
