Lakeridge Winery: Grape Stomping (Wine Anyone?!)

By 2:29 PM

You know you've seen it... the episode of "I Love Lucy" where she exerts large amounts of energy trying to stomp all of the grapes at a local winery.  It's messy but fun.  Or so it looks on TV.  Step up... remove shoes... climb the three steps to my individual stomping bucket... and enter into the abyss of grapes, juice, and lots of other fun things.  No one told me that Jimminy Cricket would be joining in on the fun.  The Leach family and I ventured out to the Lakeridge Winery for their Summer Grape Stomp Festival.  I've never been to Lakeridge Winery, despite it being less than 30 minutes from my home, much less participated in a grape stomp.  2 minutes and whomever got the most juice into the jug resting below their bucket won a free t-shirt.  Needless to say neither Katy, Gavin nor I won a free t-shirt.  But we had fun!  The festival was just a great time... good music, fun food, inexpensive (but yummy) wine.  The weather blessed us gracefully and there was the perfect combination of shade and sunshine.  Since it was my first time being there we went through the wine tasting as well as the winery tour.  All such fun.  Definitely recommend it.  I think they do the grape stomping a few times a year - check it out! www.lakeridgewinery.com

side note: Prior to grape-stomping, the staff at Lakeridge Winery gives a "safety talk" and in this information there is a warning that a very small percentage of people are sensitive to muscadine grapes and this process may irritate their skin.  They reassured us that they place the baking powder in the barrels to help with that possibility and again, its a small percentage of people.  Well... since last Saturday I have discovered that I am in that small percentage.  I am apparently allergic to muscadine grapes!  I can't describe the pain of having a raging allergic rash all over my toes, feet and ankles.  Five days and two prescriptions later and I'm still in pain and it doesn't look much better.  Just be WARNED if you plan to visit one of their future grape stomping!
