Moonshine shots anyone?!
Moonshine (also referred to as white lightning, hooch and mountain dew) has played a unique but integral role in the history of families here in the East Tennessee region. Most people hold on to the stereotypes that include a group of backwards old men creating cheap, dangerous alcohol illegally. In truth, a lot of good people made and sold moonshine in order to feed and clothe their families – it was a way of life. Without moonshine, many mountain families would not have survived.
The Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery is the first federally licensed distillery in the history of East Tennessee, and is currently one of only four distilleries operating in the state. Jack Daniel's and George Dickel received their licenses before Prohibition, and Prichards Rum opened their Tennessee facility in 1999. This unique addition to downtown Gatlinburg is sure to be a hit amongst locals and tourists alike. We got a tour from owner Cory Cottongim, who shared lots of great information on this new venture and explained the moonshine making process. We sampled the "White Lightening", “Original” and "Apple Pie" moonshine flavors – all except the last distorted our faces unrecognizable. They will be introducing Moonshine Cherries later this week (after I leave unfortunately) which will no doubt be an amazing hit, especially around the holidays.
If you’re in town, be sure to check this place out. The staff is wonderful and the products sold are unique and fun (of course I had to buy souvenirs for my team back in Orlando). Without doubt, this place will do well here in Gatlinburg, but even so I wish them the best of luck.
